What is Surface Pattern Design?
You may have heard the term "Surface Pattern Design" before and wondered what it means. When I tell people I’m a surface pattern designer, I often get blank stares. It sounds like a fancy title, but it simply refers to a designer who creates patterns for products.
The next time you walk into an interior and homewares shop, take a look around and notice all the different patterns you see. They are on everything from cushions to curtains, lampshades, and vases.
Sometimes these patterns are designed in-house by the company’s design team, but more often, they are created by surface pattern designers who license their patterns to companies for use on their products.
Our brains are naturally inclined to spot patterns, a trait that dates back to our survival instincts as hunter-gatherers. This is why patterns are so satisfying to us and why we want to adorn our walls with statement designs.
“Remember that a pattern is either right or wrong. It cannot be forgiven for blundering, as a picture may be which has otherwise great qualities in it. It is with a pattern as with a fortress, it is no stronger than its weakest point.” — William Morris

One of the most famous pattern designers, William Morris, is a prime example of the impact of pattern design on interiors. He created over 50 wallpaper patterns, all heavily inspired by the natural world. His designs were considered quite radical at the time but were immensely popular. In fact, they remain hugely popular today and are still manufactured.

Patterns don’t have to be as complex as Morris’s designs. They can also be much simpler in composition and design. For instance, Liberty is renowned for its beautiful ditsy floral patterns, which are popular choices for both fashion and interiors.
